CHAPTER 41
Sprinting out of the secret chamber onto the plateau, their attention was suddenly drawn skywards. A great beam of blue light was shooting out of the apex as the roaring sound from deep within grew louder, something akin to an enormous flowing flame, not unlike a blowtorch, only thousands of times more intense.
“So much for stealth!” yelled Burnley over the roar as Gary hurriedly bagged up all the equipment.
“Let’s get the fuck out of here now!” replied Winters moving to the edge of the plateau to check for any movement from the barracks.
“Wait,” said Gary. “We can't go down that way, there's no way someone hasn't noticed. Let’s circle around to the back of the pyramid and climb down.”
Renfield and the others didn't need telling twice as they set off in a sprint across the plateau around to the back face.
There were no steps on the other side meaning they had to drop down the large stone blocks one by one. Noises could be heard originating from the barracks now as the soldiers were no doubt wondering what in the world was going on. The group were about half way down the pyramid when the device vibrated. A face appeared on the screen for a second but then the picture began to distort as though something was interfering with the signal. Cringing as he felt a short sharp pain in his head, Gary noticed the screen had gone blank a moment later as the pain receded. This was certainly not the time to be looking for an aspirin however, Gary thought as he vaulted off the last block and onto the ground, soon to be followed by Renfield and company. They hit the ground running, hearing shouts from what was probably some very surprised towns folk. The shouts however, were promptly followed by something unexpected - screams of horror. “What the hell is going on back there,” thought Burnley as he came alongside Gary, their rapid steps aligning. Breaking the tree line on the back side of the pyramid they kept pace a little longer before slowing down to assess the situation behind them. Gary grabbed a pair of night vision goggles out of the pack and looked back into the night. Strangely enough, it didn't seem as though anyone was chasing them, and stranger still, the sounds they could hear coming from the town sounded more like a medieval battle than a pursuit, the sound of steel on steel interspersed with yelps of agony.
“That bastard never said anything about setting off fireworks,” Burnley exclaimed in an annoyed tone.
“Yeah, I think we've been played pretty hard,” replied Winters.
“Can you hear the screams?” said Renfield. “No doubt we set off a bit of a light show and probably broke someone's sacred something, but that sounds like they're hacking each other to pieces.”
“Maybe one of those rocks fell on someone?” offered Burnley half-heartedly.
“Any contact from that joker?” asked Winters. “We've done our bit, it's time we got out of this freak show.
